The Joy of Deadlines

August 8, 2011

I’ve been a tad slack the last few months. It’s not that I haven’t wanted to write on here, it’s just I haven’t got my arse in order. Why? Laziness brought on by a lack of a deadline.

So henceforth, I vow to attach deadlines to everything i do. Not literally everything, but stuff i need to keep on top of. I’ve already booked the start of September off to write a script in 4 days. A mate of mine spent a the end of last year writing a novel in a month. And he managed it too, if you’ll pardon the spelling errors on the back page.

No mean feat. A deadline can be a great disciplinarian. http://www.scriptfrenzy.org/

It’s amazing what you can actually achieve if you really have to. Deep down I harbour an ingrained fear of missed deadlines fostered by the good work of terrifying school teachers. I like that fear. It keeps you sharp.

If you’ve got forever to do something, you’ll never do it. Just look at Chinese Democracy. That took a decade and copious millions to bring to fruition – and it wasn’t much cop.

That’s the Guns ‘N’ Roses album, by the way.

Exile on Main Street had a deadline. So did Hans Holbein’s works for Henry VIII. As did any great work of creation. God set himself only 7 days to knock up the universe, and even then He factored in a day to veg.

So just get it done and get it out there and succumb to the fact that the time for perfecting is over.
